What to Expect
Mental Health Services for Children, Youth, & FamiliesWhat's next?
On your first visit, you will meet with a Therapist to help your child complete a Comprehensive Evaluation that assists with diagnosis and treatment planning. This evaluation provides an overall understanding of the cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal functioning of your child who is experiencing mental health challenges. CMMHC understands the importance of collaborating with families to provide the best support for children and youth to meet their needs.
The evaluation includes an interactive interview to understand your concerns, strengths, and goals and assessment tools and questionnaires to gather information and screen for specific mental disorders. They may ask questions regarding personal history, symptoms, psychosocial environment, and overall functioning. To understand the context of your mental health concerns and identify underlying factors, they may ask you about your family history, including significant life events, trauma, or loss. They will evaluate mood, thought processes, perception, cognition, and stress. They may also assess your child’s social network and ability to engage in daily activities. Â
All of the information gathered creates a picture of your child’s current mental health. This direct observation helps to determine if they meet the criteria necessary for a mental health diagnosis. Treatment recommendations vary from person to person and may include therapy, medication management, lifestyle changes, or referrals to specialized services or support groups. Based on the evaluation, we will discuss service options and work with your family to develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to your child’s mental health needs. These services can help your child navigate emotional difficulties, improve relationships, manage stress, cope with trauma, or develop effective coping strategies - whatever level of support they need.
