Certified Family Peer Support Services (CFPSS)

Our Family Peer Support Specialists are not just professionals, but also former or current caregivers of children with identified mental health needs. They share their relevant life experiences to reduce isolation, shame, and blame, providing a personal touch that helps your family feel understood and supported. As qualified Mental Health Practitioners, they empower and inform families from the perspective of someone who has successfully navigated similar challenges.

Certified Family Peer Support Services provides peer-based support to increase a child in treatment’s ability to function at home, school, and in the community by:
• Guiding and encouraging parents to feel less alone and gain hope
• Developing skills to strengthen a family’s ability to support a child's treatment goals, focusing on fostering and building on family strengths
• Helping families foster and build resiliency in their child
• Assisting in advocating for a child’s needs within complex systems like mental health, schools, juvenile justice, and foster care
• Educating parents and caregivers about mental illness
• Advocating for culturally appropriate services for a child in treatment
• Connecting your family with community resources and support systems

Acting as a bridge between families and the resources they need to survive, Family Support Specialists provide a safe, non-judgmental space that empowers you to overcome obstacles and work towards your goals.

Who are CMMHC’s Certified Family Peer Support Specialists?

As non-clinical professionals, our Family Peer Support Specialists have successfully navigated the care for children with mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders. They offer guidance and advocacy, drawing on their experience and specialized training to help your family learn from others' circumstances. Each Specialist undergoes specific training, passes a certification exam, and engages in supervised work experience hours.

A child must partake in another service to participate, either by accessing the service from CMMHC or by receiving services from another community provider with whom we can collaborate.
